Mapping for Change has won the 2013 UCL Social Enterprise Project of the Year Award for its’ innovative work using on-line mapping with local communities and on ‘citizen science’.

Effective Local Action on Air Quality in London Conference

Mapping for Change to host Air Pollution conference in April

Concerned communities, and organisations that work with them, including councils, academics, and public health bodies are invited to a conference being run by Mapping for Change on the 17th April at UCL.

A Look at Housing and New Ways of Working in Udine

Late January saw members of the MfC team travel to Udine to participate in a series of seminars under the Active Citizenship in Social Housing (ACts) project, funded by the Grundtvig Life Long Learning Programme.  Over the course of 3 days visits were made to communities in the area and a number of presentations covering a diverse range of perspectives were shared. Several interesting issues surrounding citizenship and social space were raised for discussion:

Social Workers and Participatory Mapping

In September of last year Louise Francis, Director of MfC, went out to Udine to deliver a seminar and training session to students from the University of Udine,  visiting students from  the University of Oulu and employees of Vicin di Casa, a local not-for-profit organisation whose aim is to promote and facilitate access to housing by migrants. Students who attended came from courses on social work, and technology and education.

Mapping Thamesmead for Change @ the Leisure Centre

Looking back to some photos of  Thamesmead, we realized we did not post about the last Mapping Thamesmead for Change session, which happened on Friday 4th May.

This time, thanks to the Thamesmere Leisure Centre, which provided us with a space that afternoon and big thanks to Ms Averil Lekau, a Thamesmead resident who took us on a tour around some remarkable places, our day was very productive. Have a look to some of our pictures below.

Participatory Mapping – a tool for informal learning

Partners from the University of Udine and University of Oulu joined us for a two days seminar that ran from the 17th-18th May and formed part of the ‘Active Citizenship in Social Housing (ACts)‘ project, funded under the Grundtvig Life Long Learning Programme. The seminar provided an opportunity for partner institutions to learn more about Mapping for Change’s use of participatory mapping with communities in the UK.

Thamesmead International Women’s Day Event

Thanks to Trust Thamesmead and to the Business Academy Bexley, Mapping for Change had the chance to do a mapping session at the Thamesmead International Women’s Day event last Wednesday (25th April).

Air pollution is one of the longstanding environmental issues that is important at global, regional and local level. It is equally something that concerns ordinary people, especially when they live in an area they consider to be polluted.

Justice in the Green Community Event

Mapping for Change facilitated the Justice in the Green event last Saturday at the Homerton Library. Members of the community surrounding Hackney Marshes, local project partners and organisations interested in how changes in Hackney are affecting the use of the Marshes and surrounding green spaces  participated in the activities.

Over the past 6 months, we have been working with researchers at UCL Development Planning Unit , extending our Hackney community map and adding functionality that allow it to host the outputs of participatory video. The work was carried out with the local community and shows different aspects of the use of Hackney marshes and the area around it.

Mapping Action on Climate Change

The UK Climate Action Map, a new interactive resource, is now on-line and under development. We have set this up for the Communities and Climate Action Alliance and it is being taken forward with the Low Carbon Communities Network. The map can be seen at www.communitymaps.org.uk/ukclimateaction.

Mapping for Change Launch

We would like to thank all who attended our launch last week. There was a stimulating exchange of views, which opened the door to new opportunities for Mapping for Change.

It is quite risqué launching a new enterprise during the tightest economic crunch in living memory, but the interest expressed over the last couple of years, the numbers that have turned out to the events that we’ve held, show that there’s a need for what we offer.

Mapping for Change Noise Maps are being used by the Royal Docks community to convey their concerns over noise levels generating from London City Airport to the GLA Environment Committee.

Mapping local history on the border of the 2012 Olympic site

The video clip above shows the work that we’ve carried out during the UrbanBuzz project that we completed in December 2008, and which led to the creation of Mapping for Change. The video shows the work that we’ve been doing in Hackney Wick, where we collected local information about community resources that were lost to the Olympic site.

The video features Theo, our intern, who explains how the map was compiled and how it was constructed. You can see how engaged the local participants are in the process of mapping. One of the important aspect for us is to engage all members of the communities, from a wide range of ages – and in this case, local memories where captured on the map!
